October 24: Explore Connecticut Newspapers for Genealogy, Janeen Bjork

Janeen Bjork LinkedInThe Southington Genealogical Society is pleased to sponsor a genealogy program by Greenwich resident Janeen Bjork entitled “Explore Connecticut Newspapers for Genealogy” on Tuesday, October 24th,  2017 7:30 at The Orchards, 34 Hobart St in Southington, CT.

TV Researcher Janeen Bjork will show you where and how to find CT newspapers online. Ms. Bjork will share the search methodology that she developed as she worked with a dozen newspaper websites with millions of pages of digitized pages whose collections continue to grow. There will be dozens of examples of the procedure, the pitfalls, and the payoff that comes from digging in multiple ways and from multiple sources for stories and items. Audience members will receive step-by-step instruction on working with OCR (optical character recognition), the technology that makes is possible to search newspapers online.

Ms. Bjork’s professional life includes 30-years as a television researcher, programmer and consultant. Her sister-in-law recruited her to genealogy, explaining, “You are going to do this for your niece and nephew.” Bjork put her detective, analytic and presentation skills to work on a dynamic tree that included over 100 years at of family photos and over 150 years of newspaper stories for her young audience. The professional researcher found thousands of family stories and items that range from the mundane to the sensational.

There will be an opportunity for questions and answers.

The meeting will be held at The Orchards at Southington in their second floor community room at 7:30 pm. There is no admission charge and no obligation to become a member. No reservations are necessary. The facility is handicapped accessible with an elevator.

The Southington Genealogical Society is a non-profit organization located in central Connecticut that promotes the accurate recording, research and preservation of family history.
